home based business marketing

Nearly two-thirds of the businesses started in 2009 won’t survive to see the end of 2011 and only half of the remaining survivors will be around in 2013. There are many reasons why these businesses will fail. Some sell products that the general public doesn’t want. Others will close because of the entrepreneur’s poor business development skills. But the majority of them will fail simply because they didn’t create an effective marketing strategy for promoting their business.
Words cannot express how important it is to have a business marketing strategy in place that details how you will create buzz about your company and get people buying your products. Would you travel to a place you’ve never been before without a GPS system or, at least, a map? Of course not. If you did, you will either fail to go where you intended or it will take you twice as long to get there because you’d spend most of your time doubling back after you went down the wrong road.
Likewise, a marketing strategy gives you direction. Instead of running around and haphazardly throwing up your sales message in places where you think you might score some customers, a marketing plan will focus your efforts on opportunities that get your message in front of your target audience. A marketing strategy will also provide you with tangible goals to achieve that you can use to determine if your marketing campaign is a success or if you need to switch tactics.
But you don’t want any old marketing plan. In order to be effective, a marketing strategy should contain three elements. First, it should use modern day marketing techniques to generate customers. Outdated tactics like cold calling have a low success rate because customers have become immune to them. In my network marketing business, I use internet tools, such as social networking, to gain the attention of my target market and attract qualified leads to me.
Instead of requiring me to chase my prospects down in a parking lot and hard selling them on my opportunity, my marketing plan encourages prospects to approach me about starting a business which allows me to avoid the dreaded stream of rejections seen with other marketing tactics.
Another trait of a good marketing plan is the ability to track your progress to make sure your efforts are getting results. By tracking your marketing efforts, you will know what techniques are working which will save you time and money by allowing you to discard the ones that are not.
And speaking of saving money, your marketing plan should give you a good return on your investment. If you pay $20 for banner advertising but you earn $10 for each prospect that you convert, then you will need to get a minimum of 2 prospects from that banner ad in order to justify the cost. You always want to make sure you are spending your marketing budget in the right places.
